LAHORE – Netherlands world class dragfliker (short corner) specialist Floris Jen Bovelnder termed its being like-home coming as he is back to Pakistan after almost two decades and he is highly thankful to Pakistan Hockey Federation President Brig (R) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar and his close friend and former rival Shahbaz Ahmed Senior for giving him this opportunity.

Bovelnder, who was dubbed as undisputed king of short corners expressed these views During an exclusive interview with The Sports Reporter's Special Correspondent Raja Mohsin Ijaz on Saturday, he further said, it’s always been great to visit Pakistan, as it is the century, where we managed to win hockey world cup, the only world cup, I had managed to win in Lahore, it was not a happy moment for the hosts Pakistan, as we managed to beat them, but trust me, I along with my teammates were highly surprised to witness that despite Pakistan lost the final against Netherlands, the local crowd was supporting us, I feel for Pakistan team, but, winning world cup is always a special moment, I had strong rivalry with one of the most decorated, blessed players Pakistan and world hockey had ever witnessed Shahbaz Senior, we were rivals on the pitch for more than a decade, but we had tremendous respect for each other off the pitch.

He further said, having witnessed Pakistan juniors playing against the international XI, it was good feeling, I can see, Pakistan had few good juniors, whom if properly trained and provided with international exposure, might went onto serve Pakistan hockey for decades, as they are still very young, but they played very well in the first 15 minutes and put much experienced International XI under enormous pressure, which was good to see, as I had witnessed green shirts rise and also sadly, they are not enjoying same success, which they use to enjoy during the Shahbaz era, having said that, Pakistan team committed too many mistakes, which was expected, as they had not played against such professional players before and they are bound to learn with each passing day.

When asked what was the difference he had noticed between Shahbaz playing days and now and as a great, where he finds Pakistan team lack and whether he thinks Shahbaz and Brig Khokhar are the perfect ones who could take Pakistan hockey where it belongs, Bovelnder, as I was not interacted with Pakistan hockey since long, I can’t exactly say where they lack and what were the reasons behind their downfall, but on the whole when sports suffer, there is naturally sharp decline witnessed in all sports not only hockey, there are lot of reasons, live telecast of matches is a major factor behind youth are not taking interest in hockey, while school, college hockey is also important to attract youth, I seriously think, as a former great Shahbaz is the man, along with a highly dedicated President Brig Khalid, who both look highly determined and want to take Pakistan hockey to new heights, in fact, I came to Pakistan just because of m y friend Shahbaz, I found Pakistanis are highly passionate, although it was highly thin crowd present on the first match, but even then, when Pakistan team took lead, there was awesome noise, crowd rose to their seats and there was clearly a sense of expectation, while former greats were also present to buck up juniors, that was highly significant, as far as I along with other greats are concern, I am highly honoured that PHF inducted us to hall of Fame, which is indeed huge honour for me, i cherish this moment that I am the part of the international hockey returning to Pakistan and frankly, I would love to help Pakistan hockey stand back to its feet, yes, if you ask me whether I feel any insecurity or I want to travel to this part again, I will definitely say, yes, I never feel any kind of security issue, that’s why I am here, while I will look if I was again called, while I can say that every player had his or her own concerns, I don’t feel any security issues, if you want my opinion, I can say, internationals should think about coming to Pakistan, but it would be purely their decision, I can’t commit on others behalf, PHF is working on positive lines and I can feel their efforts can bring more than desired fruit for Pakistan hockey, as a hockey greats, Pakistan hockey need international help and I am ready to help Pakistan, they are really wonderful, loving people, I can see the generation, who had never seen me playing were so anxiously wanted to have photograph with me, the old people were also in the ground in such good numbers, slowly and gradually, if the matches were broadcast live or even on television regularly, it will help Pakistan hockey a great deal.

I enjoyed being back to Pakistan, I love to promote hockey, its national sports of Pakistan, I know cricket is all over in Pakistan, but I made on and off the pitch new friends and very good to be here and help Pakistan hockey, I had played in Pakistan and my favourite moment is winning world cup in Pakistan and I missed plenty stroke in 1994, which gave Pakistan world cup title.

When asked about who was the best player whom he had played against, Bovelnder replied, undoubtedly Shahbaz, he was the best, his dribbles, skills, goal scoring habit, he was the best I had ever played against, we had mutual respect, he is my best friend, playing 10 years against each other all-around the world, we had always share good moments, he said, I don’t think the lack of international hockey being played in Pakistan is the reason behind hockey decline, I can see, if matches are shown on television, other city players will get huge boost, people will have more chances of watching hockey and I feel, as the national game of Pakistan, hockey deserve more attention, Pakistan had the potential of winning titles and Shahbaz and company could revive the fortunes pf Pakistan hockey, the last match will be played today (Sunday), if Pakistan team wins, it would be good for hockey and Pakistan next generation and it will put new lease of life in hockey, Bovelnder concluded.

PERTH: The amazing Roger Federer will embark on his 21st professional season when he leads Switzerland in the mixed teams Hopman Cup starting in Perth on Saturday.
The 36-year-old Swiss is coming off an extraordinary year where he took his majors tally to 19, with a fifth Australian Open title and a record eighth Wimbledon.
Federer finished the year at number two in the world behind Spanish rival Rafael Nadal, having started at 16, after a season-leading seven titles, including three Masters at Indian Wells, Miami and Shanghai.
It was a sensational season by any standards, but especially as Federer has been playing professional tennis since 1998 — a year when Bill Clinton was president of the United States, and James Cameron’s “Titanic” won 11 Oscars.
Federer will again partner Belinda Bencic at the Hopman Cup, his only event before launching his Australian Open title defence on January 15.
“It’s totally different this time around,” said Federer, whose appearance at the previous edition of the Hopman Cup followed a rare six-month absence as he recovered from injury.
“I had a great off-season. I mean, I did have a good off-season too last year but I just wasn’t sure what to expect.
“Now expectations are higher but at the same time I try to remind myself, ‘Just don’t think it’s normal and realistic to aim for the same things I did this year in 2017’.
“I’ve got to try and keep it cool, try my best and see what happens — but the preparation’s been good so far.”
– Relaxed setting –
Federer and Bencic teamed for the first time at last year’s Hopman Cup, only just missing out on sending Switzerland into the final.
Bencic missed five months of 2017 after undergoing wrist surgery.
“She had a tough year after that so it’s nice to see her back in shape as well,” Federer said.
Three guaranteed matches in the Hopman Cup’s round robin stages are a perfect preparation for Federer, who also thrives in the relaxed setting of Perth with his family in tow.
He will be up against American world number eight Jack Sock in his pool, while he could face Germany’s world number four Alexander Zverev playing in the opposite side of the draw in the final.
While Federer is a tour veteran, Zverev’s coming-of-age campaign saw him win five titles and become one of just four men to beat the Swiss great this year, in the Montreal final.
His progress up the rankings has marked him out as the most likely of the current crop of youngsters to translate his talent into Grand Slam titles.
The tall German had a roller-coaster year at the Slams — a last-16 spot at Wimbledon, but also a first-round loss in Paris, a second-round exit in New York and a third-round defeat to Nadal in Australia.
Zverev will partner former world number one Angelique Kerber, and they kick off their Hopman Cup campaign against Belgium’s David Goffin and Elise Mertens.
Vasek Pospisil and Eugenie Bouchard are in Canada’s team along with Germany, Belgium and Australia in Pool A.
Russia will be represented by Karen Khachanov and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, while Yuichi Sugita and Naomi Osaka are playing for Japan both in Pool B.

MELBOURNE: The cricket’s one of the top rivalries Ashes doesn’t always conclude without a controversy. And this time there was not just one. The latest issue adding to miseries of England is the ball-tampering allegations on pacer James Anderson.
Anderson has faced censure from Australian TV commentators who accused him of ball tampering in the fourth and penultimate Ashes Test in Melbourne.
In the first sessions of the fourth day, umpires S Ravi and Kumar Dharmasena spoke to England captain Joe Root after Stuart Broad threw the ball from mid-on that bounced well short of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow on the hard wicket block.
If that wasn’t a grave concern to be worried about for the Aussies, television cameras captured Anderson nailing the quarter-seam of the ball that runs down the face of the ball. Seeing that, Michael Slater, who was on the air that time with his former teammate Shane Warne, instantly, said, “You can’t get your nail into the ball. That’s a no-no.”
Mitchell Johnson raised questions on how England were able to extract reverse swing after only 10 overs.
“Ball reversing under 10 overs,” the 36-year-old wrote on Twitter.
But former England captain Michael Vaughan was quick to jump to Anderson’s defence.
“Ball tampering incident is ridiculous … Clearly a slow news day in #Melbourne … #OnOn,” he posted.

ISLAMABAD 150 As per expectations huge controversy was witnessed as Pakistan Sports Board completely fail to facilitate sports journalists and deprived number of genuine sports journalists from covering the final day proceedings.

It was also sad to witness that highly professional sports journalists Shakir Abbasi and Zubair Ali Khan were stopped at the entrance by PM security staff, despite showing valid accreditation cards, arriving well before the time at the venue, Azam Dar refuse to help, when this scribe contracted Director General Pakistan Sports Board Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganejra and informed him about the entire issue, Ganjera not only apologised, but also came forward and take stranded sports journalists inside the venue, he promised to conduct inquiry and bring the culprit to task, I am highly grateful to my sports journalists community, as they are all my eyes and ears, they made this event a huge success, I regret what happened to senior sports journalists and former RISJA secretary Shakir Abbasi and personally seek forgiveness, on Ganjera146s assurances, RISJA newly elected secretary Nasir Abbas Naqvi announced to postponed given strike call till January 2, in case, action not taken against Dar and others, we reserve the right to announce next course of action, while sharing his views Raja Mohsin Ijaz, former presidential candidate termed it is a deliberate attempt from few certain individuals to spoil excellent working relations between RISJA and PSB< he hoped Ganjera is a man of words and he will provide justice to those, who always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with PSB and provided excessive converge to every event, he warned in case the issue was neglected, we not only meet with IPC Minister but also go to any extent and hoped such incidents will never repeat again.A

MUMBAI: India will need mental toughness as much as consistent performances with bat and ball if they are to record their first test series victory in South Africa, captain Virat Kohli said on Wednesday.
Kohli, who was rested during India’s Twenty20 series win against Sri Lanka earlier this month, urged his team to embrace the testing conditions they will experience on tour, which are traditionally more suited to the fast bowlers.
“You need to play cricket for long period of time to win abroad,” Kohli told a news conference.
“The hunger this time is the same. We want to do what we couldn’t the last time around.
“Cricket is played with bat and ball and if you are there mentally, every condition seems like a home condition. You have to embrace the local culture to be able to do well there. The excitement is very important to be able to do well.”
India have retained their number one spot in the test rankings on the back of a formidable home record, but Kohli reckons his team have the opportunity to improve further during trips to South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand over the next 18 months.
“You need to take up the challenges while travelling to places like South Africa, England and Australia because you go there once and then you won’t travel there for a long time because of the way scheduling is done,” the 29-year-old added.
“The conditions would be testing but this one and a half year will define this Indian team and the whole team is aware of this.”
India have played 17 tests against the Proteas in South Africa, winning two and losing on eight occasions. Seven tests ended in draws.
India will play three tests beginning on Jan. 5 in Newlands, Cape Town. They also face South Africa in six one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches.

LAHORE: Pakistan still have bowlers who can put pressure on New Zealand in their upcoming one-day series despite the absence of Junaid Khan, Usman Shinwari and Imad Wasim through injury, captain Sarfraz Ahmed said Tuesday.
“It’s unfortunate that three of our key bowlers are injured but we still have good bowlers who can trouble New Zealand,” he said, highlighting Hasan Ali who was declared player of the Champions Trophy in England this year with 13 wickets.
Pakistan’s 15-man squad flies early Wednesday to play five one-day internationals followed by three Twenty20s, with the first ODI in Wellington on January 6.
Sarfraz said Pakistan are ready after their Champions Trophy triumph in England.
“We have done the best preparation for the tour and all the players are in good form so we will do our best on the New Zealand tour,” he told the media after a short training camp.
“Apart from opener Fakhar Zaman, all other players have played in New Zealand before so they know about the tough conditions and about the New Zealand team. So we are ready for the challenges.”
New Zealand won a one-day series against the West Indies 3-0 on Tuesday but Sarfraz is still confident.
“We have a strong bowling unit and I am sure that the batting will also come good in tough conditions in New Zealand,” he added.

LONDON: Harry Kane toppled Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year by scoring a double for Tottenham Hotspur against Southampton on Tuesday, also overtaking Lionel Messi as the top scorer in Europe.
England forward Kane, 24, headed in Christian Eriksen’s freekick in the 22nd minute to overtake Shearer’s 36 goals in 1995 with Blackburn Rovers, a tally he had equalled by scoring a hat-trick in Spurs’ 3-0 win at Burnley on Saturday.
The double Premier League Golden Boot holder then increased Tottenham’s advantage by finishing off a sweeping team move with a tap in from close range in the 39th minute for his 55th goal in all competitions for the year, edging ahead of Barcelona forward Messi as the top scorer in Europe for 2017.
Kane leads an impressive list of strikers for the most goals in competitive games for club and country which also contains Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Paris St Germain’s Edinson Cavani.
Kane was immediately congratulated by Shearer.
“You’ve had a magnificent 2017 @HKane. You deserve to hold the record of most Premier League goals in a calendar year. Well done and keep up the good work,” the former England and Newcastle United great wrote on Twitter.
Kane slid on his knees on the Wembley pitch after netting the milestone goal while the home fans chanted “Harry Kane: he’s one of our own”.

Former England and Tottenham forward Gary Lineker joined in praising Kane with a post on Twitter. He wrote:

“He’s only gone and done it. First Shearer’s record and now Messi’s total is surpassed. Well played @HKane. Absolutely magnificent achievement.”
Spurs led Southampton 2-0 at halftime.

MELBOURNE: Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann will not seek to renew his contract when his current deal expires at the end of 2019, he said in an interview aired Monday.
Lehmann outlined his plans to Fox Sports, declaring the English summer season in 18 months will be his last hurrah.
Australia will seek to defend their World Cup title in the first half of the 2019 English season before playing an Ashes Test series.
“That will be it,” Lehmann said when asked whether he will seek a new contract beyond 2019.
“It will be a case of too much time, too much travel.”
Lehmann has been at the helm since the 2013 Ashes when he replaced sacked coach Mickey Arthur following a disastrous tour of India.
In Lehmann’s time as coach, Australia have won two Ashes series at home and lost two in England, while also winning the 2015 World Cup.
“For me, I’ve really enjoyed the role and loving it,” he said.
“We’ll just get to that point and work out what we do from there.”
Former Test opener Justin Langer, who has an outstanding record at Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, will be among the favourites to succeed Lehmann as national coach.

World Boxing Council Silver Flyweight Champion Muhammad Waseem has lost his title shot that he had to fight against Daigo Higa in January and another boxer has replaced the Pakistani pro boxer in the fight.
Andy Kim, Waseem’s South Korean promoter, told The Sports Reporter  that having a title fight has become impossible for Waseem due to lack of funds and financial support from his home country.
“I have spent all my money on Waseem, I cannot invest anymore in him,” said Any Kim. “Everything is going against Waseem, and in fact, another boxer has now replaced him in the title fight against Higa.”
Andy Kim further told that Muhammad Waseem, who is also known as Falcon Khan, is a top notch pugilist, which is why he invested in him so much without any gain.
“Waseem is a top quality fighter, which is why I supported him. But, he is not in my top priorities anymore,” Kim stated.
He further revealed that he has written a letter to the top officials of Pakistan government to help Waseem, like they did in the past. The funds that were earlier released by Pakistan government were solely spent on boxer’s training.
If Waseem fails to defend his title in the coming days, he can lose his top position in his weight category, moreover, he can be ripped off from his WBC Silver Flyweight Champion.
Earlier, Andy Kim told The Sports Reporter that he regret signing the boxer everyday as he has not make any profit from it, instead he has invested all his financials that he earned from his distribution business.
“I am paying for everything with the profit I earn from my distribution business but I am really breaking my back doing it,” Kim stated. “I regret every day signing him because it’s been minus all the way.”
Kim said he has high hopes for the boxer who hails from Quetta, and wanted him to be remembered as one of the most respected sports personalities of the world.
“I hope this difficult period won’t last long and he gets his well-deserved rewards, live happily with comfort and honour,”

Pakistan sustained a severe blow ahead of their tour to New Zealand as Junaid Khan has been ruled out from the series due to a stress fracture in his right foot.
The left-arm pacer sustained an injury during Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) playing for Khulna Titans when a ball hit onto his foot.
The recent assessment confirmed an unhealed stress fracture for which the medical panel, headed by Dr. Sohail Saleem, advised him a four-week rest.
Earlier, Pakistan’s new pace sensation, Usman Khan Shinwari also suffered a stress fracture on his back that is keeping him away from action from the last month.
As the two premier pacers are out of Pakistan team, it can pave way for a comeback for Sohail Khan or Mohammad Irfan in the national squad.
The squad is expected to be announced sometime later this week by the national selection committee headed by Inzamam Ul Haq.
Pakistan will play a five-match ODI series in New Zealand from January 6 followed by a three-match T20 series that is to be played from January 22 to 28.

Madrid, Spain (Web Desk): Real Madrid's Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo trained alone on Thursday ahead of Real Madrid s clash against Barcelona this weekend, after sustaining a knock to his calf during the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
The Portugal star received rough treatment as he scored the winner in last Saturday s 1-0 victory over Brazilians Gremio in the final, but Ronaldo had insisted he would be fit for the visit of Barcelona.

"Cristiano Ronaldo trained alone out on the pitch, both with and without the ball," Real wrote on their website, two days ahead of Saturday's Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Following Real s return to Spain, the five-time Ballon d Or recipient had remained in the gym on Tuesday and Wednesday before finally lacing up his boots for an individual training session on Thursday.

Spanish sports daily As reported it was simply a "precaution" as Real look to trim the 11-point gap between themselves and leaders Barcelona, who are unbeaten in La Liga this season.

"He will play in the Clasico barring last-minute surprise," the paper added.

Zinedine Zidane s Real, who also trail Atletico Madrid and Valencia, are fourth in the table and realistically must win this weekend to remain in the running for the Spanish title.
